I loved working on my evil little queen. I used a lot more layers and elements that really made the piece look a lot more developed, and thought out, than anything else I’ve ever made out of paper.

Initially I wanted to create a typical older queen and king, but then decided to go in a different direction to better fit with the story (for my light box). So I decided to make a younger-looking queen.

I first drew the overall shape and size of the queen. I wanted her to be really short and stubby, like young children are for the most part. I also wanted to make sure that I did not run into the same issues I did in the previous light box.

I then cut off the head shape and placed it over black paper to create hair that would fit the head shape.

After that, I made the ears and the bangs, using the same technique.

Once I had that done, I glued the pieces together. I drew the location of the eyes and mouth and cut them out and added semi-transparent red paper to the back of the eye area – I eventually want the eyes to glow in the finished piece.

The next step was to use the body shape to create the dress. I placed it over red paper and began tracing the dress form, then the sleeves.

The next step was to create more layers for the dress and cut them out. I even decided to add semi-transparent yellow paper to the front bottom part of the dress, to give it a transparent/shiny fabric look. It’s the first time I’ve ever tried that technique and I was pleasantly surprised. I think I will be implementing that for future pieces.

I put all the layers together and made the proper adjustments. There were some parts I had to trim and others I had to redo because they weren’t the right shape or size. I also made a crown and added a bit more detail to the queen’s hair. And I added white paper behind the queen’s mouth and drew in teeth.

To finish off the piece, I added all the detail and colored everything in with markers. I then glued it all together. I was very pleased with the queen’s look. She came out better than what I had envisioned. I’m excited to see the finished piece.
